Clutch slipping and shudder

Clutch shudder is often caused by high spots on the flywheel and pressure plate faces. High spots are actually hot spots where the pressure plate face is clamped while the cluth plate is still spinning. When we install a new clutch we normally machine the flywheel to get rid of any high spots. The pressure plate, clutch plate and thrust bearing are replaced when a new clutch kit is fitted . Other causes of clutch shudder can be – bad engine mounts, oil on the clutch plate. Sometimes the springs can come apart inside and cause problems which need to be repaired.

Clutch slipping is often caused by the linings being worn out and lack of clamping pressure as the clutch plate gets too thin and the pressure plate only works to a certain thickness of the clutch plate before it looses its clamping force. Oil on the linings can also stop can also stop the clutch plate gripping properly. Some cars have a cable operated clutch, and they can run out of adjustment. This also can be a cause of clutch slippage which may be correctable with a simple adjustment.
